Frequently asked questions about therapy
Starting therapy can bring up lots of questions. Here are some answers to the things you may be wondering about therapy, how I work, and what you can expect from our sessions. In short, your therapy FAQs. If there’s something you’d like to know that isn’t covered here, please feel free to get in touch.
What is therapy?
Therapy offers a confidential and supportive space to explore what is happening in your life, understand yourself more deeply, and consider new ways of responding to difficulties or challenges.
What is person-centred therapy?
Person-centred therapy is based on the belief that you are the expert in your own life. I offer a warm, accepting and non-judgemental space where you can explore your experiences at your own pace, with the aim of developing greater self-awareness, self-acceptance and trust in yourself.
What can I come to therapy for?
You don’t need to have a particular diagnosis or know exactly what is wrong. You might come because you’re experiencing anxiety, low mood, addiction, relationship difficulties, trauma, grief, a life transition, or simply a sense of feeling stuck, disconnected or wanting to understand your past and be the best version of yourself in the future.
What happens in a therapy session?
Sessions are led by what feels important to you at the time. We may talk about what’s happening in your life, explore your feelings and experiences, or notice what is happening between us in the session. There is no set agenda you need to prepare.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and talk about what has brought you to therapy. We can discuss what you’re hoping for from therapy and you can ask any questions you have. It’s also a chance to see whether we feel like a good fit.
What if I don’t know what to talk about?
That’s completely okay. You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out or know exactly where to begin. We can start with whatever feels most present for you and find our way from there.
How long will I need to be in therapy?
There is no fixed answer. Some people find that a short period of therapy is helpful, while others choose to work for longer. We’ll regularly consider together what you’re getting from the work and what feels right for you.
Is therapy confidential?
What you share in therapy is treated as confidential, within the professional and legal limits that apply to therapy. I’ll explain these limits clearly at the beginning of our work so you know what to expect.
How often do we meet?
Sessions are usually held weekly, as regularity can help create continuity and support the therapeutic process. We can discuss what frequency would work best for your circumstances.
How do I know if you’re the right therapist for me?
Finding the right therapist is important. You don’t have to know straight away. An initial conversation gives us both an opportunity to get a sense of whether working together feels comfortable and whether my approach fits what you’re looking for.
